SPORTS & REHABILITATION CENTRE

COMPETITION DESIGN

The aim of this competition work is to create a park hotel and recreation centre that combines the functions of a luxurious five star hotel, along with a high class sport and recreation centre - Park Hotel & Spa. Sanus per aquam - which means health through water, is an idea shaped in the Roman times, now enjoying its re-enactment. Spa means the peace of the spirit and relaxation of the body, achieved through various treatments and baths, but also through a friendly surrounding that encourages rest. A modern SPA is a facility where one can rest, regain their both physical and mental strength. The development of medicine confirmed the medicinal power of water baths, often joining hydrotherapy with other treatments, such as cryotherapy, medicinal gymnastics, massage etc. The cult of health and a sport-like posture also encourages the development of tennis and fitness clubs, as well as gyms.

The park-like surrounding and a direct contact with Błonie, Kraków, support the planned function of the centre. The spatial idea of the project constitutes an image of low, brick pavilions, encompassed by the sea of greenery, surrounded by garden ponds and fountains which correspond to the modernist architecture of the land. The central space of the urban structure constitutes a garden - meadow open south-wise and connected with the area of Błonie.

The designed architectural form consists of brick, greenery and water. The designed buildings in far views create the roof lines, drawn by the tree crowns beneath. The hotel sinks into the surrounding of the park. A partially glass form of the swimming pool creates a transparent "shell" of the beach, where the internal and external views are of equal importance. In this way, the connection between the building and nature will be emphasised. The water surrounding the buildings plays a symbolic function, enlivened by fountains in the summer, will turn into a slide in winter.
